How to set up and enable File History

  1. W11) Go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Backup Options (this sucks)
  2. Control Panel - (all panel items) → File History
    1. [ LHP > Select Drive ]
      1. Add network location
        1. Select Folder (for backups to be stored).
        2. Select \\synology\NAS_Backups (and the specific subdirectory for your computer)
        3. [Select Folder]
      2. Select File History drive
        1. Select folder from last step: \\synology…
        2. [Ok]
      3. [Turn on]
      4. Confirm “File History is on” is displayed
      5. Advanced settings
        1. Save copies of files [Daily]
        2. [Save changes]
      6. Consider: System Image Backup…
      7. WINDOWS 11 removed Add a Folder to File History (just because they are mean)
        1. Try this (from a user on Reddit)
        2. manually add folder directly into the “File History XML file:
          1. %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config1.xml
          2. Add something like this:
            1. <UserFolder>E:\backup_this</UserFolder>
            2. no guarantees
  3. W10) Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security.
    1. Select [LHP→Backup] and click “Add a drive.”
      1. More options (if necessary due to “No Usable Drives” message)
      2. See advanced settings
        1. Select drive
          1. Add network location
          2. Select the drive or network location you want to use for File History’s backups.
          3. Select N: \\synology\NAS_Backups (and the specific subdirectory for your computer)
          4. [Ok]
        2. [Turn on]
      3. Confirm “File History is on” is displayed
      4. Advanced settings
        1. Save copies of files [Daily]
        2. [Save changes]
      5. Consider: System Image Backup…
      6. From [LHP→Backup] page, select → [More options]
        1. Backup options - [Add a folder]
          1. Add: C:\aaa_data
          2. Notice all the folders being backed up! wow!
            1. Review contents of each, maybe remove some?
              1. select to remove: [Remove]
